Bear Trap Resources — When to Stop Optimizing, Ratio Ranges & Joiner Math (Ton)

Bear Trap is PvE with a 38.4B reward cap — stop optimizing around Gen 5–6. How to read ratio ranges, why joiner gains shrink 25→20→16% (additive buckets), Raina, low-attendance Bear, pet myth.

TL;DR

Bear Trap is PvE with a reward cap. Optimizing for it pays off early, but by Gen 5–6, Gen 10 at the latest, you hit the cap → after that, build your account around the content you actually enjoy (PvP etc.).

For Bear itself, Ton says his Discord resources (staggered bear guide + ratio ranges + gen-by-gen tier list) are enough for 99% of players.

🛑 When to stop optimizing for Bear

ItemDetails
Personal damage reward cap38.4B (cumulative personal damage). Almost nothing extra beyond it
Cap historyUsed to be 9.6B or 19.2B (Ton isn't sure which) → 1–2 tiers were added. Could grow again
One-time target72M per the subtitles — only needs to be reached once. Ton hit 84M long ago
Old serversHit 38B every time with nothing left to gain — everyone gets there eventually
Ton (Gen 12)Reaches the cap in the first 10–15 min of a 30-min fight, then stops joining. 200M+ single rallies are common in his alliance

💡 Bear optimization is narrow

Cyrille (expert) + offensive stats and you're done. A marksman-only account is already near-optimal for Bear. But pouring gear, charms and heroes into Bear alone leaves you nothing later → first decide whether you want to be good at field, SvS or garrison.

🧰 Account prep — gear swap before Bear

InfantryHectorFully optimized: move infantry main gear to your Bear leader too. Skippable late game (infantry ≤1%).
LancerMiaMoving your usual lancer's (Karol) main gear to Mia is optimal. Ton skips it.
MarksmanRufusSwap marksman main gear onto Rufus — the one swap Ton actually does.

Rally Hero Joiner & Ratio GuideDetailed additive vs multiplicative joiner math

Ton explicitly says you can copy-paste or link these into your alliance Discord.

🐻 Staggered Bear Trap

Mandatory for any serious alliance after Gen 3–4. Switch around Gen 2–3; before that you lose little without it.

200k (max capacity)
100M · 100%
100k (half)
70.1M · ≈70%

🔢 Half the troops → only ~30% less damage

That's why you cap troops per march and use the spare troops to join more rallies — more total alliance damage. Operational details (cap math, staggering, top-to-bottom joining) are in the "Bear Trap Comprehensive Strategy" post.

Early on, an even troop split is fine — Ton split troops himself until Gen 3–4 (tested on F2P accounts), only adding a bit more marksmen/lancers to the march for bigger rallies.

📐 How to read the ratio ranges

The weaker you are, the more infantry and lancers you need for full damage (missing them lowers damage — Ton isn't sure if it's a penalty or a missing bonus). The low end of a range means "don't go below this".

Your situationPick from the rangeExample (Gen 3, per subtitles)
F2P · weakerHigh end more infantry/lancersInfantry 4–5%, even 10% is fine
MiddleMiddleInfantry 4% · lancer 30% · rest marksmen
Whale · very strongLow end aggressiveInfantry 1–2% · lancer at the minimum (~20%)

⚠️ Be conservative when joining

Rally damage uses the leader's stats. Joining an F2P leader with a whale-level aggressive ratio lowers damage. → Joining marches: conservative; aggressive ratios only when joining whales.

  • ❌ The popular 50/50 or 10%/10% infantry/lancer numbers have no basis in Bear damage math.
  • Every march carries its own ratio — one player sending all infantry and another all lancers "to balance out" doesn't work.
  • No "spend $X → use value Y" rule exists → test yourself. For precision, use the WOS Nerds calculator (google "bear calculator"; 30–60 min to fill in).

🤝 Joiner scenario table what "diminishing returns" really is

Leader Geronimo·Mia·Bradley / Hector·Mia·Bradley — gain per added joiner when stacking the same joiner

4 identical joiners1st2nd3rd4th
Hendrik (+25% bucket)+25%+20%+16%≈+14%
Philly / Sonia+16%……+11%

✅ Cause = same-bucket buffs are additive (not a duplicate penalty)

Same-bucket buffs add up: 1.25 → 1.50 → 1.75 → 2.00, so the relative gain shrinks 25% → 20% → 16.7% → 14.3%. Philly/Sonia follow the same shape (1.16 → … → 1.64, last step +10.8% ≈ 11%). Different buckets multiply → mixing buckets wins.

  • 4 Hendrik ≫ 4 Sonia — even the 4th Hendrik beats the first Sonia.
  • Jessie·Seo-yoon usually good · Sonia bad · Raina situational (slightly better with a Geronimo leader).
  • The table assumes Mia·Bradley leaders — it doesn't transfer to other leader combos as-is.

🎯 Why Raina is "conditional"

Raina only boosts normal attacks

Total damage = normal attack + skill damage. Hector and Mia lean heavily on skill damage → Raina's share is small. Add a skill-heavy marksman (e.g. Rufus) and even a 30% Raina buff touches only a tiny slice of the rally → practically useless.

The subtitles say "then Mia is useless", but from context Ton means Raina.

FAQ covers: when to use Raina · why Gwen is bad · why Mia is a bad Bear joiner (best joiner almost everywhere except Bear and Crazy Joe) · why Hendrik is so strong on Bear

🏷️ Reading the gen-by-gen tier list images

BoxMeaning
Must useAlways-use joiners
Never useNever — whatever anyone says
Use with conditionsDepends (reason in the linked FAQ) — e.g. Raina
Low-attendance bearOnly when joiners are short
Own marchYour own march ranking, left → right

Own-march ranking assumes both heroes maxed. E.g. Gen 1: Geronimo > Natalia > Sergey, but a 5★ widget-10 Natalia beats a 3★ widget-2 Geronimo → when unsure, compare real stats. The higher the gen, the longer the Never-use box.

👥 Spotting a low-attendance Bear — count it yourself

  1. Tap the Bear Trap → check open rallies' member count and whether joiners bring heroes.
  2. If rallies keep leaving half-empty with 1–3 joiners = low attendance → you're wasting damage.
  3. Typical cause: allowing only Jessie/Seo-yoon means half of players' six marches go out heroless.
  4. In low attendance, allow low-attendance joiners (Philly etc.) — +15% beats an empty slot (Philly doesn't reduce damage, she just adds less).
  5. If joiners are plentiful, use only top joiners like Jessie and Hendrik instead of Philly.

With two alliance Bears (main and second), the second is more likely low-attendance — observe a few events and set separate rules.

🧪 Myth check

Do pets lower Bear HP / damage? → No

Ton himself made a video saying so ~1.5 years ago (based on a support answer and feel-tests), but it was later debunked by proper controlled tests. Documented on Discord with test links.

🪜 Next steps optional

  • Understand the damage formula itself
  • Use the WOS Nerds calculator for your own march's ratio
  • Ton's take: the provided ratio ranges are enough for 99% — only min-maxers need to go further.
