Bear Trap Strategy After the December Patch
The December update overturned several pieces of received wisdom: health reduction is simply inert, Gwen is a nerf as a joiner, and Hector beats both Gregory and Flint. Plus Marksman rankings by generation and the joiner tiers.
What this document is
The December game update changed a number of hero skills and with them the Bear Trap meta. Guides from before that — most of YouTube included — are partly outdated. This covers the assumptions that got overturned and the updated strategy.
The heart of Bear damage is not "send more" but "send less so you can join more rallies". For the basic structure and upgrading the trap itself, see the Bear Trap training guide.
🔄 What the December patch overturned debunked
| Item | The old assumption | Now (verified) |
|---|---|---|
| harmless Health-reduction effects (riding along on pets and buffs) |
"Drop any pet or buff carrying a health-reduction component before the Bear" | The Bear has no health. Health reduction of any kind has zero effect on Bear damage — it neither helps nor hurts. → If it comes bundled with something useful, just leave it on; it is harmless. Bringing it deliberately is pointless |
| a gain Defence reduction (the Frostscale Chameleon, Hendrik) | "Surely that is actually a loss?" | Works as written, and it is a gain. Hendrik is a very good joiner on the Bear and generally (Gen10, 4-star) |
| safe Pet buffs and debuffs | Unclear | Safe to use |
| wrong Gregory > Hector? | "Gregory (Gen10) replaces Hector" | No. Hector is ahead. The video making that claim predates December |
| reversed Flint vs Hector | Contested | Hector, comfortably. Flint was nerfed, Hector buffed |
🐻 The three core Bear Trap strategies
The less you send, the more total damage each rally does. Going 200k → 100k (half the troops) only costs you 30% of the damage. The surplus goes into joining more rallies.
The maths: average rally capacity ÷ about 15 people (the leader sends full). Gen10 with FC10 ≈ 110–125k; early on ≈ 80k.
Team A immediately · team B +1 minute · team C +2 minutes. There is always an open rally when your troops get home → a continuous cascade.
Run it as A/B/C role teams or as plain staggered departures — either works.
No cherry-picking which rallies to join. Fill them from the top down, in order.
Optional: you may skip anything under 50k (though even 50k does ~50% of a full march's damage). Slide past a rally if there is room for your march further down.
⛔ Do not use Gwen as a joiner
She does not work as described (increased damage taken by the enemy). She is actively a nerf in any rally with skill damage in it — and Hector, Mia and most Marksmen deal skill damage, so it is a loss almost every time. (Fine as the leader of your own rally; the ban is on joining.)
🦸 Bear Trap hero rankings as of the December patch
Infantry (the leader's front slot, the backbone): I Jeronimo ▶ Hector ▶ Natalia ▶ Flint (everyone else, Gregory included, is a poor fit for the Bear)
Lancer: L Mia (the mainstay) · Reina and Renee only match her at 30%+ Lancers (below that, Mia wins)
| Gen (Marksman) | Hero | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Gen 1 | M Bahiti (F2P) / Zinman (paid) | |
| Gen 2 | PICK M Alonso | Top-tier everywhere, and lasts a long time |
| Gen 3 | M Stay on Alonso | |
| Gen 4 | test it M Lynn or Alonso | Depends on your widgets — Alonso may still be ahead |
| Gen 5 | invest hard M Gwen | The best all-round option for the Bear and the Arena (as a leader. Banned as a joiner) |
| Gen 6 | usually skip M Wayne | Gwen first. If you can afford both, Wayne is very good too |
| Gen 7 | PICK ★widget Lv.8 M Bradley | A monster — carries you to Gen10. Also the best in the Arena |
| Gen 8 | not for the Bear M Hendrik | Great in the Arena and as a joiner, but a poor fit here → stay on Bradley |
| Gen 9 | optional M Xura | Less damage variance than Bradley and more consistent. Not worth investing in for the Bear alone |
| Gen 10 | M Blanchette | Bradley-tier, but needs a comparable widget. Not ready until late Gen10 |
| Gen 11 | PICK ★ M Rufus | By a mile. Not on the Lucky Wheel → dump SSR shards into him for an early 5-star |
※ Hector's widget is defensive, so it does nothing for the Bear (an attack) → take the skill and 4-star is enough. Mia's widget is offensive, on the other hand, so it does apply → worth investing in.
🤝 Joiner tiers the first 4 slots — guaranteed flat 25% first
| Tier | Joiner | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| good, 25% | Jessie and her class · Jasser · Jeronimo · Bradley · Blanchette · Magnus | Guaranteed flat, maximum multiplicative gain |
| borderline, 20% | Sonya | Some alliances ban her |
| conditional | Reina | Boosts normal attacks only → she does nothing for the skill damage from Hector, Mia or Blanchette. In a skill-damage rally she can even be a nerf |
| bad, 15% | Philly · Norah (Marksman) | A big damage loss |
| banned | Gwen (as a joiner) · anything proc-based (40%/20%) | Gwen is a bug-like nerf. The Bear runs a fixed 10 turns, so proc-based skills have a low expected value |
※ Why this matters: putting a 15% joiner (Philly) in an early slot to squeeze in a few more of your own troops cuts the whole rally's damage by ~10% — everyone loses, you included. More troops do not raise the damage proportionally.
📐 Ratios by generation (Bear)
The principle: the better your stats (troop level, heroes, gear, Charms), the lower the minimum Infantry and Lancer you need, so more of the march becomes Marksmen. Fall below a class minimum and you take a damage penalty.
| Gen | Infantry | Lancer | Marksman | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Gen 1 | ── split evenly (≈33/33/33) ── | Not enough troops — join the big rallies | ||
| Gen 2 | 5–20% | 20–30% | ~50% | In practice you are still splitting — not enough Marksmen yet |
| Gen 3–5 | 1–4% | 20–39% | the rest | Good stats push Infantry below 4–5%. Lancers are still needed in bulk |
| Gen 5+ | 0.5–3% | 10–20% (30–40% on a Renee/Lancer build) | ~75–81% | |
| Gen 10–11 | 0.5–1% | ~1–7% | 90%+ | Gen11 can go as far as 0.5/1/98.5 (needs testing) |
※ Where the author currently sits: 1% Infantry / ~6–7% Lancer / 90%+ Marksman (with a safety margin). In practice: send your optimal march (maximum Marksmen) into the whale rallies, and the marches carrying more Infantry and Lancers into the feeder rallies (mid, light and free-to-play).
⭐ The Expert Cyrille
The first Expert an F2P player gets. Level 50 maxes most of her skills, which takes a few weeks. The key one is Entrapment: up to +300k rally capacity (2–2.5 more people per rally).
The deployment-capacity skill is pointless if you are capping your troops → ignore it. The other two give more Essence Stones and more Enhancement XP Components (Lv.4 is easy). Maxing her early, around Gen 3–4, pays off enormously over time.
🏅 Personal rewards and team play
You only need to hit the personal points cap once — with a "Super Bear" that buffs everyone (whales piled in after the league for a 20% buff), even 72M is easy. After that, aim for the minimum.
The real gain from the upper brackets is about one Essence Stone a day. Letting several more people reach the next bracket is worth more to the alliance than taking another 10B for yourself.
Hero classes cross-checked against per-generation data (whiteoutdata, FRVR). Subtitle corrections: Ector → Hector, Zora → Xura, Andri → Hendrik, Fidi → Philly, Cyreel → Cyrille, JC → Jessie.
