Bear Trap: The Complete Alliance Strategy
Bear damage is maximized by capping the troops you commit, staggering your rallies and joining from the top down - not by sending more. Plus ratios by generation, the December patch hero order, and the joiners that quietly wreck a rally.
In one line
Bear damage is maximised not by "sending more" but by ① capping the troops you commit → ② staggering your rallies → ③ joining from the top down. Those three make 95% of an alliance deal more damage.
The only people who lose out are the handful who always grabbed the best rally first, and even they are only conceding a little power for the team — everyone's rewards (Essence Stones and the rest) go up.
🐻 The three alliance essentials staggered rallies
📏 Join cap = the average rally capacity ÷ about 15 people
It varies with stats, generation and Experts. Ton (Gen12) uses 125k; early on it is 60–80k. It only starts to matter from Gen 2–3 (before that you do not have the troops for it to bite). The rally leader — the person opening the rally — sends full troops, so leaders and whales score slightly more, which is fair.
⚠️ Do not write "cherry-picking" in the alliance announcement
It translates into some languages as picking actual cherries. Just say "join from the top down, do not pick and choose." Optional: if your troops exceed what the rally still needs and that would leave the next person only a sliver, top it up instead.
🔢 Why the damage multiplies
The number of rallies you join goes up several times over. Doubling your troops into one rally, by contrast, adds +40% to that single rally while collapsing the number of participants and rallies → a net loss.
⚔️ Why the Bear ratios always include a little Infantry and Lancer important · disputed
🛡️ Ton's claim — Bear fights need Infantry and Lancers to work
There is a mechanic that requires Infantry and Lancers present for full damage, so a pure 100% Marksman march is penalised. In practice a strong T11/FC10 player sending pure Marksmen came out well below comparable T11/T12 players running mixed classes (confirmed in the reports) — not a skill or stat problem.
The opposite of Crazy Joe: 100% Marksman is the right answer in the Joe HQ, but the Bear runs on a different mechanic and the same approach does not carry over. Hence the small Infantry and Lancer slice in every ratio below. The higher your stats and generation, the lower that minimum goes.
⚠️ The cause is disputed (the conclusion is not)
Some guides, WoS Guru among them, argue there is no hard penalty on pure Marksmen — the Bear simply cannot damage your troops, so a tank is pointless. The conclusion — keep a little Infantry and Lancer — is common to both of Ton's videos, but the exact reason "why" is not settled between guides → treat it as provisional.
📐 Ratios by generation Ton · Infantry / Lancer / Marksman
| Gen | Infantry | Lancer | Marksman | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Gen 1 | Split evenly (≈33 / 33 / 33) | Not enough troops — just split them and join the big rallies | ||
| Gen 2 | Keep splitting | Still short on Marksmen | ||
| Gen 3–4 | 5–20% | 20–30% | 50%+ | Ratios become workable here. Paying for training speedups pushes Infantry lower still |
| Gen 5+ | 0.5–3% | 5–20% (30–40% on a Renee/Reina build) | the rest | Running Mia. The further you get from Mia, the fewer Lancers |
| Gen 11–12 (spending) | 1% | 1% | 98% | Ton's own (Gen12). With good stats Infantry can go to 0.5% |
📝 Two versions of the ratio table, and how to allocate in practice
Both are based on the WOS Nerds sheet: ㉠ the old version (more Infantry — slightly outdated, but fine for an alliance already using it) / ㉡ the optimised version (gets you about 90% of optimal without spending 30 minutes filling in the sheet).
The game cannot store a percentage (only 0 or an absolute troop count), so round to something clean like 1% and leave yourself a safety margin. Send your highest-Marksman march to the whale rallies as a main joiner, and the marches carrying more Infantry and Lancers into the feeder rallies (F2P and light spenders).
🦸 Bear Trap heroes as of the December 2025 patch
⚠️ Anything from before 25 December is out of date
Recommending Magnus is now wrong — he is well behind Hector and Jeronimo. Jeronimo and Hector were buffed. Videos and guides from before 25 December may have the order inverted.
| Class | Recommended order | Key notes |
|---|---|---|
| Infantry the leader slot | Jeronimo ▶ Hector ▶ Natalia ▶ Flint | Jeronimo = the best average, but only at 4-star with the widget at Lv.10. Hector (G5) is very close, needs no widget (4-star and skill 5 is enough), is cheap and F2P-friendly, but swings a lot |
| Lancer | Mia — by a distance | Her widget fires on attacking rallies, which makes it worth having. Molly early on, then swap the moment you get Mia. Renee and Reina are alternatives only on a 30–40% Lancer build |
| Marksman | See the ladder below | Use the best you own. Alonso (G2) stays top-tier for a long time, Bradley (G7) holds until Gen 10, and Rufus (G11) has an absurd attacking widget for the Bear |
🏹 The Marksman generation ladder F2P milestones
Xura (G9) and Blanchette (G10) each edge slightly ahead of Bradley. Rufus is not on the Lucky Wheel → dump your SSR shards into him and you can reach 5-star early (he stays relevant to Gen 14–15).
🎯 Skill damage figures for the Bear Ton · WOS Nerds
The ordering comes from the extra damage each skill adds in the Tundra:
- Hector's second skill: 25% chance of +100% → +25% on average. Both skills together come to ≈ +78.5%.
- Jeronimo: +25% + +25% + the widget → a little above 78.5%, and more consistent.
- Conclusion: Jeronimo (4-star, skill 5, widget 10) > Hector — but Hector gets close without a widget and swings much harder.
The order comes from understanding the skill mechanics plus repeated testing, not from eyeballing a rally or two.
🤝 Joiner principles the first 4 to join share their skills
ℹ️ How it works
Bear joiners share the first Expedition skill of the first 4 people to join, from their hero in slot 1, with the leader's rally (filled in skill-level order). Only offensive (damage) skills count. Each person's damage is still calculated from their own army, wearing the leader's stats, heroes and joiners — it is not a shared pot being divided up. → Use S-tier only (Hendrik, Lloyd and the like stack fine, on a par with Jessie and Jasser).
| Verdict | Joiner | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| S-tier ≈25% | Jessie · Jasser · Seo-yoon · Jeronimo · Bradley · Blanchette · Hendrik · Lloyd | Guaranteed flat, maximum multiplicative gain. A nominal 25% can land at 18–22% in practice, depending on the setup and interference |
| ⛔ Banned | Sonya | Interferes with Hector's second skill → on the Bear you get 8–12% instead of 20%. Poor across the board |
| ⛔ Banned | Gwen — as a joiner only | Sending her as a joiner wrecks the rally's damage. (Fine as your own rally leader with your own Marksmen — the ban is on joining) |
| Low-activity Bear only | Philly · Norah (15%) | Banned on an active Bear Trap. Where rallies do not fill their 4 joiner slots, they beat nothing at all → add skill-5 Philly and Gen5 Norah, and drop them once the slots overflow |
💡 Extra rules
If Mia is your Lancer leader, do not also use her as a joiner (the exception being a Reina lead with no Mia available). Active and inactive Bear Traps can run different rules — open a rally and count the joiners: 4 means it is active (S-tier only), fewer means it is not (the 15% heroes are allowed).
🎲 Damage variance a trap to watch for
⚠️ Never judge two heroes on one or two rallies
Bear damage swings hard from rally to rally — up to 20%. Hector is the worst for it (Jeronimo is comparatively stable). "Jeronimo > Hector" is a conclusion from the skill formulas plus long-run testing, not from eyeballing → take a big enough sample when you test.
🗺️ Trap placement and layout do not over-correct
🧩 Rearranging the rows solves most of it
- Do not stack every whale in row 1 (the first wave). Spread the strong players across rows 1 and 2 → a better chance of clearing every rally even if someone goes offline for a bit. Weaker players go in row 3.
- March speed buffs (the Bear intel missions and so on) have shrunk the penalty on rows 2 and 3 → they are no longer badly disadvantaged (Ton is in row 4 and has no trouble).
- Only when you actually move the trap: an active alliance should leave room around it (a compact layout also helps SvS defence), and pick a wide spot free of lakes, mountains and ice on the map before teleporting the HQ.
- Very active alliances should avoid extreme slot-style layouts (someone always ends up far away). At 30–40 members, compact is better for defence.
🏅 Rewards and team play
- You only need to hit the personal points cap (the max reward level) once. After that, aim for the minimum — the real gain between the upper brackets is on the order of one Essence Stone a day.
- Ton (Gen12) gets close to the requirement (32B against 38B) sending only his own marches at full strength → the spare marches go into teammates' rallies and amplify the alliance's total.
- Taking someone else's chance to farm another 10B for yourself is worth less to the alliance than letting several more people reach the next bracket.

⚠️ Why "the Bear needs Infantry and Lancers" is disputed between guides — only the conclusion (keep a small Infantry and Lancer slice) is common ground, and it is provisional.
