WOS Frostfire Mine Whale (Gathering) Strategy — LLLLR and the Every-Minute 5k Loop (Ton)
The whale playbook for Frostfire Mine: LLLLR skills, camping Lv.3 veins at 53/s with the every-minute 5,000 occupy trigger, why chasing volcanoes is the classic whale mistake, expert Kathy, Smelter play and counterplay.
One-line summary — Unlock the Left-Left-Left-Left-Right (LLLLR) skill path, park every march on Lv.3 veins and keep gathering, then trigger the +5,000 occupy bonus with one march every minute and fire the Lv.5 gathering buff (+50%) on every cooldown. Do not chase outburst veins ("volcanoes") or patrols — that is the most common whale mistake.
Who is this strategy for?
Frostfire Mine has three broad playbooks: ① the Patrol (F2P) strategy — avoid PvP, farm patrols; ② the Gathering (whale) strategy — this article; ③ a Hybrid — patrol skills mixed with gathering (tentative, unverified).
The whale strategy assumes you are among the strongest players in your match — you must be able to sit on your mines and defend them. Ton finished a clear 3rd two events in a row with this build, and took 1st place with a personal best score in this third run.
Since the rewards are Charm Designs and Charm Guides, any gems you burn here are effectively a "gems → charm materials" conversion.
① Skill tree — Left, Left, Left, Left, Right (LLLLR)
Unlike the F2P standard "RRLLR", the whale build takes the left node at Lv.1–4 and only Lv.5 on the right.
| Level | Pick | Effect | Why |
|---|---|---|---|
| Lv.1 | Left | +1,080 Orichalcum per minute (passive) | You won't be farming patrols for long, so passive income wins |
| Lv.2 | Left | +12,000 deployment capacity per march | Directly helps mine defense and the Smelter fight — matters more the less of a top whale you are |
| Lv.3 | Left | +5,000 Orichalcum on occupying a vein (60s cooldown) | The core skill of every strategy |
| Lv.4 | Left | +15% gathering efficiency | Gathering is your main income |
| Lv.5 | Right | +50% gathering speed (60s duration · 5min cooldown · manual) | Lv.3 veins mine explosively while active — forgetting to fire it is pure loss |
Measured gathering speed (Lv.3 vein, from the video)
32/s (no skills) → 37/s (+15%) → 53/s (+15% with +50% active)
32 × (1 + 0.15 + 0.50) ≈ 53 — the skills appear to stack additively. You can read an opponent's skill literacy just from their gathering speed.
Unlock the tree by hunting patrols early. Some whales burn gems (~50k) to insta-kill patrols and open the tree fastest — Ton doesn't, but rates it as acceptable since it's still a "gems → charms" conversion.
② The core loop — repeat every minute once the tree is done
1Camp Lv.3 veins
Park all marches in a quiet spot and keep gathering. Start from the outside, take the farther veins first and save the closer ones for later.
2Trigger the 5k every minute
Pull one march, re-occupy a vein → confirm the "+5000" floating text → send it back. Note the clock time of each trigger to time the next one.
3Manage the Lv.5 buff
Fire it manually on every 5-minute cooldown. It lasts 60s, so pop it while all marches are gathering. Ton himself lost 1–2 minutes forgetting it.
4Redeploy in one batch
When veins are about to deplete, regroup and redeploy everything at once (teleport if needed). Don't leave marches scattered.
③ Ignore outburst veins ("volcanoes") by default
Chasing volcanoes and patrols with a strong account is the most common mistake
The total income of buffed marches sitting on Lv.3 veins (53/s × several marches + 5k per minute) beats patrol farming and beats "gathering + volcanoes at the same time". Pulling a gathering march to grab an outburst loses more to travel and re-occupation than the outburst is worth.
- Exceptions: an outburst on the path of the march already out for the 5k trigger, or when the Lv.5 buff is down and you aren't at full speed anyway
- An opponent busily chasing volcanoes is usually someone you can beat
- Some whales even use speedups between marches — it works, but it isn't required
④ Expert Kathy — the hidden pillar of this build
The Frostfire Mine specialist expert; her skills upgrade with Books of Knowledge. Ton openly regretted not having the books to max her ("KT") for this run. (Values at max level.)
| Skill | Max effect |
|---|---|
| Icefire Hunter | +50% skill-tree XP from defeating Mine Patrols |
| Valorous Cold | +50,000 deployment capacity · hero recovery time -60% |
| Winter Treasures | +60 Charm Designs at 200,000 Orichalcum collected |
| Efficient Mining | +5,000 Orichalcum per minute passively once battle starts (up to ~150k over 30 min) · +100 Charm Guides at 200k |
| Talent (Child of Frost) | Up to +30% troop lethality & health inside the mine |
Reaching the top (Tundra) league also grants a +20% in-event combat buff (tentative), which makes patrol fights and mine defense much easier.
⑤ Smelter & operational details
| Situation | What to do |
|---|---|
| Crowded start | Don't force fights — most overlapping players teleport away soon |
| Smelter (center) | Stage your main march nearby before it opens → enter the moment it does. If kicked, heal with speedups and re-enter — gems burned here are also "gems → charms". Multi-tap on a phone is faster than PC for the entry race |
| Someone invades your spot | If they're stronger, don't fight back — take a weaker player's vein instead (never leave marches idle) |
| Lost a mine | No troop losses in this mode — recover and re-occupy; just manage hero cooldowns |
| Spotting threats | Locate high-level players early and set up away from them |
Risk & counterplay
Weakness: if a stronger whale is in your match, you get evicted from your mines repeatedly and the whole plan collapses. Running the event in weeks/time slots before the strongest accounts show up (with their buffs) is part of the play.
Countering it: if you spot someone gathering at 53/s, kick their marches out of the mines one by one right after they collect the 5k — breaking the loop tanks their score.
The third strategy — Hybrid (tentative, unverified)
Patrol-oriented skill path + Lv.3 vein gathering + volcanoes. A top scorer in Ton's match ran this mix to a surprisingly strong result — it may be unexpectedly efficient for non-maxed whales, but it demands far more teleports and micro, and no one has documented it properly yet. This article will be updated when solid material appears.
Results
| Run | Strategy | Result |
|---|---|---|
| Past year+ | Patrol (F2P) strategy | Bottom of his historical scores |
| Previous two events | Whale (gathering) strategy | 3rd place twice, by a clear margin |
| This video | Whale strategy + 20% league buff | 1st place · personal best |
Key takeaways
- ✅ Skills: LLLLR — whale build (F2P uses RRLLR)
- ✅ Loop: camp Lv.3 veins + one march triggers the 5k every minute + fire the Lv.5 buff on cooldown
- ✅ Gathering speed: 32 → 37 (+15%) → 53 (+15% +50%, additive)
- ✅ Maxed expert Kathy = +5,000/min passive plus charm bonuses
- ✅ Smelter: stage your main march before it opens — don't be stingy with gems/speedups (gems → charms)
- ❌ Chasing volcanoes and patrols (the classic whale mistake) — only en route to a 5k trigger
- ⚠️ A stronger whale in the match threatens the whole strategy — always know the risk
